WINEMAKING COMMENTS: Nebbiolo is grown only at our Saint Jude’s vineyard. The low yield vines produce fruit of seasonal intensity, so we only make a varietal Nebbiolo in the very best vintages. In 2009, we trialled a mixture of cane and spur pruning, with fruit grown on canes left to ripen slowly in the ideal weather conditions, without the risk of excessive alcohol. A small parcel of the best fruit was kept aside and allowed to “wild ferment” to produce a unique wine reflective of the vineyard and growing region. Less intense colour than other reds, typical of Nebbiolo, is deceptive – this is a wine of great complexity and powerful tannins, well-balanced with varietal fruit and floral tones and velvety soft texture. Will reward careful cellaring.
